As the countdown begins to this weekend’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, one of South Africa’s greatest marathoners, Stephen Mokoka, is preparing to chase history once again aiming for a remarkable fourth victory on the streets of Cape Town while leading the charge for Hollywood Athletics Club in their mission to paint the Mother City Purple.
This year’s edition has assembled arguably the strongest elite marathon field ever seen on South African soil, headlined by marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, the former marathon world record holder and widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner in history. Kipchoge’s presence has elevated anticipation around the race to unprecedented levels, creating a global spotlight for South African road running.
For Mokoka, however, the focus remains firmly on preparation, execution and competing at the highest level against a world-class field. “My training went well from November till last week it has been good,” said Mokoka ahead of race day. The veteran marathoner, who knows the Cape Town route better than most, warned runners not to underestimate the course despite its reputation.
“The route is not as flat people think because the elevation is around 200 plus,” he explained. “Try save as much energy as possible on the 1st half because the second half is better and faster. Hydrate enough because the race starts 30 minutes later than usual and you need more fluids. Run your own pace and avoid pacing or racing fellow runners and be patient as the marathon is journey which needs you to take it gently.”
Mokoka’s ambitions are clear. While another title would further cement his legacy in Cape Town, he also has his sights set on a fast performance. “It’s both time and position. I will be happy with sub 2:10 minimum and sub 2:09 will be big goal and position aiming to be top position hopefully better than the last time I raced there.”
The addition of Kipchoge to the field is something Mokoka believes transcends elite competition and will inspire runners across the continent. “It is good to have Eliud in SA and racing in our continent and his presence will bring hype, drive and also inspiration to lots of runners from all walks of life,” he said.
“We appreciate his presence and we know lots of people have been dreaming to see him, shake hands with him, take pictures as well run alongside him. This dream has come true for South Africans.”
For Mokoka, the significance of the event stretches beyond individual goals. Racing a global-standard marathon on home soil is an opportunity both athletes and supporters can embrace together. “It is (an) opportunity to race a global event on home soil and racing world class runners while everyone can witness it,” he said.
“Not having to travel far away for a world class event and also the support we get on road means a lot to me.”
And as race morning approaches, Mokoka has one final message for his Hollywood Athletics Club Teammates and supporters. “Let us go out there and carry the flag of (the) Purple Team with pride,” he said. “Let’s paint the route Purple and most importantly enjoy the race, pace well and finish strong.”
