Dynamite Comes in Small Packages: Makhosi Mhlongo

The saying “dynamite comes in small packages” rings true for Makhosi Mhlongo, the pocket rocket from Mpumalanga. Running in the colours of the Hollywood Athletics Club and under the guidance of legendary ultra-distance runner Prodigal Khumalo, Makhosi has become a formidable presence across multiple distances.

Her running journey began in school, where she competed in events ranging from 100m to 1500m. Early victories in these races motivated her to rise through the ranks. By Grade 11, she entered her first 10km road race, finishing third overall and first among juniors.

“I started winning prize money and bringing home envelopes. My parents could finally see the results of those long afternoons and late training sessions, which helped put their minds at ease,” she recalls.

In many African households, especially for girls, certain dreams are often put aside in favour of the boys. Makhosi, however, is grateful for her parents’ unwavering support in pursuing her passion.

With nearly three decades of running under her belt and seven years of coaching from Prodigal Khumalo whom she met through her deaf friend who assists in translation Makhosi has evolved into a seasoned athlete.

“In my senior years, Coach told me he believed I could be a great marathon runner and that he wanted to work with me,” she says. That conversation marked the beginning of her journey into marathons and ultra-distance races.

Makhosi’s achievements speak volumes: she boasts five marathon victories and one ultra-marathon win (a gruelling 103km event). She currently holds the ASA 50km championship title, earned last year in Gqeberha, and secured a bronze medal at this year’s marathon championships in Cape Town.

Impressive credentials for someone who once said that, if not a runner, she’d be a sign language interpreter and beadwork artist.

Beyond her competitive accolades, Makhosi has received national recognition. “Receiving an award from the MEC of Sports in 2018 for outstanding achievement is something I’ll never forget,” she proudly shares.

Her favourite events to run are marathons and ultra-marathons. “I love morning runs the most they’re refreshing, they clear the mind, and they energise the body,” she says.

Makhosi skilfully balances family life and training. “My sessions are in the early morning, when everyone is still asleep, so I get to spend time with my family during the day and evening. When I work as a freelance sign language interpreter, I still make time for family after training in the afternoon.” She emphasizes that maintaining this balance is crucial, especially given how often her training and competitions take her away from home. “During training camps, I stay connected through phone and video calls,” she adds.

While her family remains her biggest support system, Makhosi also credits others close to her for their encouragement.

“I’m blessed with a great support network my family, my mentor and friend Blanche Moila, my coach, my church family, my Purple Team at HAC, and friends who are like sisters to me,” she shares.

Makhosi Mhlongo is a true star on and off the road. A role model to many, she uses her platform to give back to the community, working with children and serving as a Sign Language interpreter. With her talent and dedication, there’s no doubt that her journey is far from over.
