Tayla Kavanagh delivered a defining statement of dominance at the ASA Senior Track and Field Championships, completing a sensational double victory in the 5 000m and 10 000m, an achievement that perfectly reflects the high-performance language of Hollywood Athletics Club and its Elite Purple Stars.
In a championship that demanded both speed and endurance, Kavanagh rose to the occasion with precision, control, and authority, setting the 2nd fastest time ever by a South African woman over 5 000m and lapping the entire field in the 10 000m 2 days later.
On day 1, Kavanagh ran a gun to tape victory, with a breakthrough performance in the 5 000m, clocking a lifetime personal best of 14:58, exactly 32 seconds quicker than her previous best over the distance. In doing so, she not only claimed her maiden national title on the track but wrote her name into South African distance running history, becoming one of three women to break the 15-minute barrier.
“I ran a really big PB today and to be honest I did not expect this time to be so quick but I came here to run fast and I did just that,” said Kavanagh afterwards. I’m happy to leave the champs with a personal best and to know I have run under 15 minutes on my own and without any pacemakers.
But true to the mindset of a Purple Star, one title was never going to be enough. Having declared her intent earlier in the week, “I’m doubling. I’m doing both 5 and 10,” Kavanagh returned 2 days later to the championships to stamp her authority on the 10 000m, securing gold in 32:05 to complete an unforgettable double.

Two runs and two dominant displays, showing total and utter control. The Purple Star philosophy is built on disciplined preparation and the ability to deliver under pressure. Kavanagh’s championship campaign mirrored that philosophy perfectly, as she stole the show.
Her ability to transition from a sub-15-minute 5 000m effort to a commanding 10 000m victory speaks volumes about both her physical capacity and mental resilience. As a proud representative of Hollywood Athletics Club, Kavanagh continues to elevate what it means to be an Elite Purple Star.
Her performances are not isolated moments either; they are part of a broader culture of excellence where athletes are empowered to push boundaries and redefine standards.
This double victory at the national championships is more than a milestone; it’s a signal of what is to come from the young athlete who lives in Hillcrest. The future is bright for Kavanagh, and we can expect to see her proudly in Purple next month at the Absa Run Your City Cape Town 10km.
