Neheng Khatala: The People’s Champion

Balancing full-time studies and an elite-level Athletics career isn’t for the faint-hearted, but Neheng Khatala manages this balancing act with aplomb! George Sithole caught up with her.

In a sport dominated by strong, competitive women specialising in various distances from the 10km to half-marathons, marathons, and ultra-marathons many athletes focus on excelling in just one discipline. But that’s not the case for Hollywood Athletics Club’s Neheng Khatala. She’s fiercely competitive across all distances, able to go toe-to-toe from 10km races to ultra-marathons, earning top finishes at major events like the Absa Runner Your City, Spar Ladies, Totalsports Ladies, and being crowned the Hollywoodbets 10km Champion in 2024. Her victory at the 2024 Soweto Marathon and an impressive 3rd place finish in her debut at the Two Oceans Marathon further highlight her versatility and determination.

Balancing this demanding athletic schedule with her full-time studies at North-West University, where she is pursuing a BHSc and a Diploma in Sports Sciences, is no easy feat. “It’s challenging,” Neheng admits, “but I’ve learned how to manage my time. Training, studying, and rest are all part of the same journey for me. I’m grateful for the support I get from my coach and the university.”

Neheng’s competitive running journey began 10 years ago, initially as a simple way to get to school and participate in school races. Over time, running became much more than a talent or hobby. “I realized it was my way of creating a better future not only for myself but for my family and community. It gave me purpose,” she said.

With numerous titles under her belt, Neheng has undoubtedly found her calling. Beyond running, she’s passionate about rural development and education. “If I weren’t running, I’d be teaching or coaching. I want to mentor young girls, especially in rural areas, to show them that anything is possible,” she shared.

Neheng’s kind and gentle nature is reflected not only in her calm, composed running style but also in her never-say-die attitude that has earned her many victories and strong performances on the road.

She credits much of her success to her coach, Andrew Booyens, who has been a major part of her journey for over eight years. “Andrew has shaped me into the athlete I am today. All my major achievements are thanks to his support and coaching,” Neheng says.

Before joining Hollywood Athletics Club in 2024, Neheng ran for Nedbank Lesotho. Reflecting on her decision to join Hollywood, she says, “The support structure, professionalism, and team spirit here have really helped elevate my performance.”

Running is a demanding and often isolating sport, and without support, it can be tough. Fortunately, Neheng has a strong support network she credits for her ongoing success.

“My family, especially my mother, is my foundation. My coach, teammates, and close friends make up my circle of strength. They encourage me when things get tough and celebrate my successes.”

Balancing her personal life with her running career requires focus and discipline. “It’s not always easy, but I’ve learned to prioritise. Rest and family are important. I stay connected to my roots they remind me why I started. I also make time for reflection, prayer, and being present in the moment,” she explained.

Neheng Khatala is a true talent and one of Hollywood Athletics Club’s brightest stars, one who will undoubtedly continue to shine for years to come.
