PREVIEW: Top Runners Set to Light Up the Hollywoodbets Joburg 10km

The streets of Johannesburg will come alive on Saturday as thousands of runners take on the Hollywoodbets Joburg 10km, one of the most exciting events on the South African road running calendar. Cuan Walker previews the Hollywoodbets Joburg 10km.

With a sold-out field, lucrative prize money, and a thrilling car giveaway, the event promises world-class competition and an unforgettable experience for both athletes and supporters.

As was seen last month at the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km, a world class field has assembled and although it wont be as fast as it was down in Durban, due to the hills and altitude of the city of gold, spectators at the event as well as those watching the race live on SABC 2 are ensured that the racing upfront will be a thrilling spectacular!

Elites to keep an eye on

This year’s race has drawn some of the country’s top distance runners, each determined to claim the coveted title:

  • Gerda Steyn (Hollywood AC) – The queen of the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon steps down in distance, but don’t be surprised to see the smiling assassin occupy a spot on the podium.
  • Tete Dijana (Nedbank) – A three-time winner of the Comrades Marathon, Dijana, like Steyn, steps down in distance, but don’t be fooled by the man who hails from Mafikeng into thinking he’s only good at the ultras. With a 29:46 best, Dijana can pull a surprise.
  • Bennett Seloyi (Boxer) – A rising star in the South African running scene, Bennett’s recent performances hint at a potential breakthrough on race day, and the young athlete who hails from Johannesburg could be the one to watch for victory.
  • Givemore Mudzinganyama (Entsika) – With international racing experience, Givemore brings depth and stamina to the men’s elite field. A former Two Oceans Marathon winner, Mudzinganyama trains at Zoo Lake and is coming back into nice form.
  • Stephen Mokoka (Hollywood AC) – The man with more national titles than anyone else in the sport, Mokoka is deep into marathon training as he looks to make history next month in Cape Town aiming to become a four-time winner. With a strong marathon base in his legs, he has the power to fly over the Johannesburg hills.
  • Fridah Ndinda (Tatu City AC) – A young but fierce competitor, Fridah is the defending champion and after her third place in the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km on 30 August, she is tipped as the one to watch in the women’s race.
  • Karabo Mailula (Tuks) – Tipped as the next big star on the South African distance scene, Mailula is climbing the ranks and will be looking for a big breakthrough to take victory on Saturday.
