Tayla Kavanagh, the “Princess of the Hollywood Athletics Club,” is admired by many both on and off the road. Known for her calm and composed running style arms relaxed, eyes focused on the road she is a standout performer for the Hollywood Athletics Club. George Sithole caught up with her.
Born and raised in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Tayla still resides there with her parents and sister. From the beginning of her running journey, her biggest supporters have been her mom and dad, who are a constant presence at her races cheering her on from the start line to the finish.
“Running, like any other sport, requires a strong support system,” Tayla shared. “Family, they’ve seen me at my best and worst. They’ve been there for the early mornings and gruelling training sessions. They see my potential and never hesitate to bring it out of me.”
While some view running as a solitary, even selfish pursuit due to the long hours of training and travel, Tayla highlights the collective effort behind her success. “My family sacrifices their time and energy every single day for me. Their belief in me keeps me going. Sometimes, all you need is the right people around you people who will do anything for you and I’m so blessed to have that,” she added
Tayla’s passion for running began at just nine-years-old when she started competing in cross-country events during her school days. By the age of 16, it was clear she was destined for something greater. Fast-forward to today, and she’s making waves in the elite circles, proudly wearing the purple colours of Hollywood Athletics Club, a team she joined in 2023 following the unfortunate collapse of Murray & Roberts.
Hollywood AC saw her potential and quickly brought her on board an investment that’s already paying off. Specialising in shorter distances, Tayla has made a name for herself in 10km races such as the SPAR Ladies and Totalsports events, consistently finishing in top positions. She also holds the national 5km record, proving her incredible speed and ability to compete with the best in the country.
Despite her success in shorter races, Tayla’s heart is set on the half marathon. She has only competed in three 21.1km events so far and has won all of them. When asked about her marathon plans, she shared: “I do want to move to the full marathon eventually. I’m still only 23, so right now I’m focused on improving my times in the shorter distances. But yes, I’m definitely looking forward to stepping up to 42km in the future,” she shared.
When she does, she’ll be joining a star-studded group of marathoners at Hollywood AC, including the likes of Neheng Khatala, Cian Oldknow, Irvette van Zyl, Gerda Steyn, Rutendo Nyahora, Makhosazana Mhlongo, and Loveness Madziva – a wealth of talent and experience to learn from.
Being part of such a fast-growing club has already made a huge impact on her journey. “The support from Hollywood Athletics Club is amazing,” Tayla said. “I love the camaraderie among the athletes. Seeing all the purple vests and t-shirts at the start lines just feels like home. Everyone is so encouraging and supportive.”
With her talent, work ethic, and the support of her club and family, Tayla Kavanagh has a promising future ahead. At just 23, she’s already accomplished so much and there’s no doubt she has the potential to represent South Africa on the world stage, including the Olympics and World Championships.
“A big thank you to Hollywood for backing and believing in me,” she added. “You’re making a girl’s dream come true, and I’m so grateful.”
