Tayla Kavanagh has delivered another outstanding performance, breaking a national record at the recent World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, this past weekend.
She finished in the women’s 5km race at a swift time of 14:51 which placed her fourth in the race and simultaneously making her the first South African female athlete to break the 15-minute barrier.
This is just the latest achievement of an already impressive year for the athlete who:
- won the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km, finishing at 31:39 in August and setting a course record.
- placed first at the 10km SPAR Women’s Grand Prix in Durban at 31:31 in June and won the same race in Cape Town in March at 31:33.
- secured first place in the women’s 5km in 14:58.52 at the Athletics South Africa Senior Track and Field Championships in Stellenbosch in April 2026. She also finished first for the 10km race at 32:05.59.
Kavanagh also competed in five other races where she claimed the title in typical Tayla fashion. The long-distance runner emphasised in an interview after the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km race that she was careful to not over compete and advised other runners to do the same to avoid injury.
Hollywood Athletics Club Manager, Brett Goodwin, said, “Of course we’re incredibly proud to partner with such an incredible athlete such as Tayla who keeps flying the Purple Team flag high. The fact that she is self-trained makes her achievements even more admirable; she is clearly an athlete that understands her body and knows when to push herself as well. Congratulations to her.”
