Hollywood Purple Elite star, Tayla Kavanagh, has once again etched her name into South African athletics history, producing a sensational performance at the Brasov Running Festival in Romania on Sunday morning to smash the national 10km record.
The 25-year-old produced a remarkable 30:50 to take 22 seconds off the previous South African record of 31:12, becoming the first South African woman to break the 31minute barrier over 10km. Kavanagh finished fifth in a quality international field, but it was her time that was the headline act as she produced the fastest 10km ever run by a South African woman.
The performance was another stunning milestone in what a breakthrough has already been 2026 season for the Hollywood Purple Elite athlete. Kavanagh improved her previous personal best of 31:26 by an extraordinary 36 seconds, underlining just how rapidly she has progressed over the past year and establishing herself as one of South Africa’s leading distance runners.
What makes Sunday’s performance even more remarkable is that it comes just two weeks after Kavanagh rewrote another chapter of the South African record books. Competing at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, she ran 14:51 over 5km to break the national record, meaning she has now set South African records over both 5km and 10km in the space of just 15 days.
The latest achievement is the culmination of a remarkable season in which Kavanagh has continued to demonstrate her versatility and consistency across both track and road. Earlier this year, she claimed South African titles over 5 000m and 10 000m, while her 14:58.52 over 5 000m saw her become only the third South African woman to break the 15-minute barrier for the distance.
Her performances on the roads have been equally impressive. At the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km in August, Kavanagh showed tremendous resilience after an early fall threatened to derail her race. She picked herself up after that fall and went on to win in 31:39, setting a new course record in the process. At that stage, the national 10km record remained the next major target, but few could have predicted just how emphatically she would eventually surpass it.
Hollywood Purple Elite team manager Manfred Seidler said the performance was a reflection of the confidence and belief that has continued to grow around Kavanagh throughout the season.
“Tayla has been building towards something special for quite some time, and we have seen the progression race by race. To run 30:50 and become the first South African woman under 31 minutes is an incredible achievement, but what is most pleasing is that she is still developing and learning with every race. She has worked incredibly hard, she believes in herself and she has shown that she can compete at the highest level internationally. We are extremely proud of what she has achieved today and excited to see where this journey takes her.”
In Romania, Kavanagh delivered the performance that had been building throughout the season. Her 30:50 not only moved her to the top of the South African record books, but also further established her credentials on the international stage. To break the national record by 22 seconds is a remarkable achievement in itself, while becoming the country’s first woman under 31 minutes marks a significant moment in South African distance running.
For Hollywood Athletics Club, seeing one of its Purple Elite athletes continue to reach new heights is a hugely proud moment. Kavanagh’s development has been one of the standout stories of the year, and her ability to continue improving while competing successfully at both national and international level is a testament to the hard work being put in behind the scenes.
From South African champion, to sub 15 minute 5 000m runner, to national 5km record-holder and now national 10km record-holder, Kavanagh has enjoyed a transformation that has taken her into a new level of the sport. At just 25 years old, there is also every reason to believe that Sunday’s 30:50 may be another stepping stone in what promises to be an exciting career.
For now, though, the record belongs to Tayla Kavanagh, another remarkable achievement for the Hollywood Purple Elite and another proud moment for everyone associated with the Purple family.
