NEHENG KHATALA: Soweto Marathon Champion Sets Sights On Two Oceans

Reigning Soweto Marathon champion Neheng Khatala is poised to make her debut at the prestigious Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town.

Representing the Hollywood Athletics Club and Lesotho, Khatala’s journey from the small village of Ketane to the international stage is a testament to her hard work, resilience, and unwavering humility.

A full-time student at North-West University, Khatala masterfully balances her demanding academic schedule with her training regimen. Her ability to juggle these commitments reflects a level of discipline and focus that sets her apart. Coach Andrew Booyens, who has guided her to multiple titles and national records, speaks highly of her composed approach to the sport.

“Neheng is a remarkably humble athlete,” says Booyens. “While she doesn’t train as much as some others due to her studies, I have no doubt she’ll be competitive. She’s a smart racer who understands how to pace herself and execute a race plan. The challenge, as always, is ensuring she arrives fit and healthy on race day after a balanced training block.”

Khatala’s recent performances underline her talent and potential. Over the past year, she has claimed victories at the Mountain Marathon 21.1km in Lesotho and the Hollywood AC 10km, alongside multiple podium finishes. Despite her growing list of achievements, she remains grounded and focused on the task at hand.

“My days are packed with classes, studying, and training, I don’t have much time to overthink the race. I plan to travel to Cape Town early in race week to relax and familiarize myself with the course,” said the typically calm Khatala, whose practical approach reflects her ability to stay composed under pressure.

Even from a distance, Khatala’s training is meticulously overseen by Assistant Coach Dikotsi Lekopa. Booyens describes Lekopa as a sharp and motivating young coach who plays a vital role in her preparation. “Dikotsi is incredibly dedicated and ensures Neheng’s training is on track. It’s a true team effort,” Booyens explained.

With the Soweto Marathon triumph under her belt and a string of impressive performances in 2024, Khatala now turns her attention to the Two Oceans Marathon. This debut marks another milestone in her remarkable career, offering her the opportunity to showcase the quiet strength, humility, and determination that has made her such a tough competitor.

When she lines up in Cape Town, Khatala will carry not only the hopes of her village and country but also the quiet confidence of an athlete who has repeatedly proven that she belongs among the best. Her journey imspires, reminding us that greatness often emerges from the humblest beginnings. She is a true champion and a role model to many young ladies who are looking to become runners.
